Indiana Jones 4
Genre: Action/Adventure.

Studio: Paramount.
Production Company: Lucasfilm.

Project Phase: Development Hell.

Who's In It: Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones).

Who's Making It: Presumably Steven Spielberg will direct, George Lucas as Executive Producer.

Premise: Unknown. Latest script treatment by Jeffrey Boam remains secret. See Scoop Feedback for additional developments.

Release Date: Unknown.

Comments: The long-awaited next chapter of Indy's adventures was never to be, if you remember the buzz from the Lucasfilm camp when Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was released back in the summer of 1989. Spielberg and Lucas wanted to cap the series off as a trilogy, and Harrison Ford's response to the media was that he wanted to focus more on less action-intensive films. Then, Ford signed up as Jack Ryan, went after the one-armed man to clear his name, and has starred in other big-budget action films. Perhaps he liked the adrenaline, or finally realized what made him the actor with the highest-grossing film record ever; whatever the case, he expressed his interest in donning Henry Jones Junior's fedora again.

And thus began development on Indiana Jones IV. Since the project became known back in 1994, it was decided that the only way any of the original creatorsa Jones IV

ork on the fourth installment would be if they all agreed on the script (Ford, Lucas and Spielberg, that is). Screenwriter Jeffrey Boam has worked on a treatment, but the project is moving along at a snail's pace. Ford always has at least two projects in various stages of development, Lucas is working on developing the next Star Wars trilogy, and Spielberg is busy setting up his own studio as well as reprising directing chores on Jurassic Park 2. Perhaps Indy faces his biggest cliffhanger yet - whether he'll make it back to the silver screen again.

Rumors: Unknown.

January 26, 1999... Now that plans are afoot for the next two Star Wars prequels, the next, most eagerly-anticipated fan-based film has got to be Indiana Jones 4. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the release of the last Indy adventure, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. For nearly five years Ford, Spielberg and Lucas have said they want to don their fedoras again but as yet they still haven't followed through. Not only have commissioned scripts been penned and handed in to Lucasfilm (by Jeb Stuart, Jeffrey Boam and Chris Columbus, to name three that we know of), but fans have also written their own follow-ups and posted them on the 'net, much to the confusion and dissapointment of fans hoping that finally something was happening on Indy 4.

Two recent items worthy of attention occured this month:

It looked like Cinescape Insider had landed a major break earlier this month when the web site broke the story about a mysterious Indy script titled 'Indiana Jones and the Sword of Arthur'. While CI maintained that the authenticity of the script was in question, they did have reason to believe it could be a genuine script, possibly penned by the last writer known to be working on an Indy movie script, Jeffrey Boam. However, it turns out an overeager Indy fan had taken a spec script written by two Indy fans named Michael Prentice and Steven Frye and then created a new title page that credited Jeffrey Boam as the author, thereby stealing their work! That mysterious fan also then tried to give the doctored script an air of authenticity by adding a 'Property of Lucasfilm' copyright notice.

Thankfully the real authors contacted CI and notified them that it was indeed their fanfic script that was being improperly distributed. Since then the authors have placed their script online for any interested parties to read at this site here and CI regretfully had to break the bad news to the long-suffering Indy fans. [Reported by Cinescape Insider.]

With all the lies and disinformation swirling around, and the simple fact that nothing tangible has ever emerged from all the various Indy movie rumors that have ever appeared (a.k.a. Indiana Jones and the World Wide Web of Deception and Outright Lies). We believe that the concept is so tangled up in development and the key players relaxed attitudes towards getting the project rolling that no one should believe anything you read about Indy 4 unless it comes from the mouths of Ford, Spielberg or Lucas. And that cautionary warning should be remembered especially when you read our latest scoop that follows these words...

"My family work in English television and actor Dennis Lawson is a family friend, you may remember him as Eedge from Star Wars (also Ewan McGregor's uncle). Well he was discussing being in a new film role in Indy IV as Belloch's brother, and something about revenge a La Simon Gruber in Die Hard With a Vengeance. Also a more industrial landscape is promised." [Identity of scooper withheld by request.]

(Belloch, for those of you who don't recall, was the rival to Indy in Raiders of the Lost Ark.)

If we shot a weekly game of darts with Ewan or Dennis, yeah, we probably could confirm or deny this scoop for you, but we simply can't. We don't know if our scooper is pulling our leg or being sincerly honest. We merely present it to you as interesting gossip. But again: don't believe it until something official is announced. Ford's schedule is booked for a year: he's shooting Random Hearts, followed by What Lies Beneath and then will most likely film The Sum of All Fears, the next Jack Ryan adventure. Spielberg's shooting Tom Cruise in Minority Report before moving on to Memoirs of a Geisha (if he doesn't change his mind again), and Lucas has got this little project called Star Wars keeping him busy for the next five years. Come to think of it, if any of you hear any gossip about something called Indiana Jones and the Lost Retirement Home of False Dentures, email us: you may be on to something.

February 24, 1999... Could this really, really, really be true???

"A week ago from last Friday, Steven Spielberg was interviewed on the show Access Hollywood, where he was attending a critics ceremony. Spielberg was asked questions about the success of SPR, and then he was asked about his pal Lucas' upcoming Star Wars prequel. He mentioned that he has seen it (what there was of it) and that he couldn't wait until he can see it again, in full.

"The reporter also asked Steven Spielberg what his next film is, and Spielberg said that this coming fall season he hopes to start filming Minority Report with Tom Cruise.

"And, then, the reporter asked Spielberg if there is going to be another Indiana Jones film. Spielberg responded that there is going to be another film, and that he hopes to have it out in theaters at no later than the summer of 2001."

I guess only time will tell if it will happen! [Scoop sent by 'Templer'.]

May 4, 1999... During last weekend's Star Wars Celebration, producer Rick McCallum answered a fan's question about the stuck-in-development-hell Indy 4 movie. McCallum said that there's a script that Lucas, Spielber and Ford are all excited about but unfortunately McCallum can't see the start of the movie for at least another four to five years. [Submitted by Brian Calderwood and 'Spaceman Spiff'.]

August 3, 1999... One of the rumored scripts that was supposedly written was Indiana Jones and the Saucermen From Mars. We here at CA have never laid eyes on the script in question (unlike the Monkey King script written by Chris Columbus, which we know exists 'cuz we have a copy of it), so anything we post about the Saucermen script hasn't been validated by your home team.

That said, here's an alleged short script review of the Saucermen script. If you don't want to read it but are interested in knowning whether the scooper thought it worked or failed...well, 'failed' would be the word the scooper would choose.

"The script is dated February 1995 and has Lucas' name co-credited for the story along with Jeb Stuart who wrote the screenplay. The Lucasfilm logo is also stamped on the title page.

"In a word, the script is very, very mediocre. Obviously, it centers around aliens and is set partially in New Mexico, but Roswell is never mentioned in the script nor is Mars. The tradmark opening lacks the intensity and humor of Temple of Doom (a film worth watching over and over for first half and hour) and the intrigue of Raiders. Some interesting developments, Indy falls in love with a linguisist named Elaine McGreggor early on (like page six) and proposes to her. At the wedding, all the old favorites show up. Marion, Kate Capeshaw's character (I forget her name), and Short Round and Sallah. Even Henry Jones is there with a smug comment about his son's choice in women.

"Then Elaine gets kidnapped, just before she makes it to the altar, and we're off to New Mexico. The script is so bland it's hard to remember all the details. But, they find a downed alien saucer and some 'device' which they think has something to do with coordinates and a detination time frame. Of course, there are bad guys. But not Nazis. Here, they are the Americans who first found the aircraft and a couple of Russian spies. Also, they mention something to the effect that Indy was, at one point, a spy during WWI. Never heard that before. So some meaningless chases happen. In the end, Indy is at a drive in movie theater with Elaine smooching away. On the movie screen, a sci fi movie plays and a scene pops up where an alien ship puts a navy vessel in a tractor beam and pulls it out of the ocean. Just then, Indy's truck gets tractor beamed up by one of the alien saucers. That, right there, defines the script. Every Indy joke is capitalized on, and some of them very early on. For example, Indy disappears in a rive for while and, as everyone thinks he drowed, his hand suddenly pops up and pulls himself up. There is another movie car, jumping from car to car, from truck to truck chase. And, finally, in the end Indy gets married. Or does he?"

[A failing grade has been given by 'ursinod'.]

February 15, 2000... We knew Harrison Ford was going to be taping a segment of this program soon. Apparently it went down last night -- and that's why we have this still-warm, freshly baked scoop for you straight from someone who was in attendance mere hours ago:

"I heard this myself, striaght from HARRISON FORD'S mouth!

"Tonight I had the pleasure of sitting 3 feet away from Harrison Ford at a taping of 'Live At The Actors Studio' on West 12th street in Manhattan. He WAS EXTREMELY gracious and candid as he spoke about his life, concluding with a question and answer session that ended around 11:15 pm. All in all, he spoke for over 3 hours. Someone posed the inevitable question about Indiana Jones IV and here is his COMPLETE, word-for-word answer to the question:

Question: 'Will there be another Indiana Jones film?'
Harrison Ford: 'Oh Yehhh...(audience claps)......(laughs). Now wait, I'm not makin' any announcement here tonight. I want it to happen. There is no script yet that everybody is REALLY happy with. George is a bit pre-occupied with that "other" movie (audience laughs), but Steven and I are very ambitious to do it. But we all realize it has to be great.'

"It was very cool to be so close to one of my heroes, and to see what a really nice guy he is. VERY humble and very sincere."
[Rick, we wished we were there with you.]

February 15, 2000... Completely unconfirmed and graded as a 8 on the rumormongering scale, an anonymous scooper told us that M. Night Shyamalan (director/writer of The Sixth Sense) is "supposedly" meeting with Spielberg in regards to writing the Indy 4 screenplay. Well, last we heard Night was busy prepping the start of his next project, Unbreakable. [Name withheld.]

March 14, 2000... At the start of this week director Steven Spielberg received his Life Achievement Award from the Directors Guild of America. After the ceremony Spielberg was asked the following question by the press:

"Q:"Your wife says that in your family you talk about movies from early morning. What do you tell your children when you go to the movies with them?"

Spielberg's answer will no doubt set the hearts of Indy fans racing. "Actually, I have to answer to the same question all the time:'Dad, when are you going to film a new Indiana Jones movie?' But tonight I want to make a promise: Indiana Jones is coming back soon." [Scooped by Erik.]

Unfortunately, Indy won't be return before Spielberg begins work on the late Stanley Kubrick's shelved sci-fi project A.I.. Spielberg begins shooting that film this July, and he's also committed to direct Minority Report starring Tom Cruise come next April. We don't think Steve's gonna find the time to squeeze in another Indy adventure until sometime around the fall of '01, at least.

June 22, 2000... Variety is reporting today that M. Night Shyamalan has been asked if he'd like to write the screenplay for the proposed fourth Indiana Jones adventure. Variety said that Spielberg, Lucas and Ford were "in the process of drafting" Shyamalan to pen the new script. Variety's sources say that Shyamalan is favoring accepting the offer but wouldn't be able to start work on Indy 4 until he wraps up production on Unbreakable. A start date for Shyamalan of January 2001 was given by the magazine.

This latest news corroborates what a source told us last February (see February 15/00 scoop for full details.) It was a lofty claim coming from a new scooper and one we were instantly suspicious of. We corresponded a few more times with the scooper and asked for them to explain how they would be aware of such information. The scooper did just that, along with providing further explanation as to who they were.

We also asked them how this project came out, and in light of today's announcement on Variety, what they had to say amazes us: Spielberg and Shyamalan may have been talking about this idea for at least six months prior to today!

As we were told by the scooper, Spielberg first contacted Shyamalan about writing Indy 4 last year and has scheduled a face-to-face meeting with the young writer/director. Unfortunately the meeting between Spielberg and Shyamalan had to be postponed due to Spielberg's recent kidney operation which took place on February 7th of this year. By that time Shyamalan was knee-deep into pre-production of Unbreakable and was casting his actors. Talks have been taking place when the two directors have had time to spare (Spielberg jumped into his next project, A.I. one month after his surgery had been done.) If Shyamalan does accept the job, that is one Indy script that is going to be the end-all, be-all of Indy scripts.

This is one rumor we're delighted to have come true -- and we broke it first!

July 4, 2000... Last week MovieHeadlines.net contacted Lucasfilm to clarify the reports that Shyamalan was committed to writing Indy 4 sometime in the near future. Lucasfilm told the site last week that Variety had been premature in reporting Shyamalan's latest gig; it turns out Night is just one of several screenwriters being considered for the job. [Thanks to Scott Chitwood for the report.]

Now before we all go off to start guessing who the other possible writers for Indy 4 may be, we'd like to remember those quotes the three key Indy players made not less than a year ago (and referred to on this very page.) Remember all that talk from Lucas, Spielberg and Ford they had a script and were merely waiting for a time when all three could work together? Everyone seems to have forgotten that they said just that very recently...so the question we'd like to ask Lucasfilm is: what happened recently that made Lucas, Spielberg and Ford feel that they needed a new Indy script?? Inquiring minds want to know.

July 17, 2000... Entertainment Weekly, when doing a round-up of big name sequels, talked about when we could expect this one. Ford's manager said that all they need is a finished script -- so he thinks it could be 2002. Marvin Levy, however, who is Spielberg's spokesman, is skeptical. He says, "Steven's got A.I., George has Star Wars. Do the math. We could be lookin' at 2007, but your guess is as good as mine." [Originally appeared in Entertainment Weekly; reported by Widgett.]

August 18, 2000... Hold your breath and promise us you won't start an unconfirmed rumor: that's our job, after all. This is completely unconfirmed and should be taken as such: our next scooper says Natalie Portman has asked George Lucas something that would be very interesting to Indy fans, should it come to pass.

"Apparently from the set of Star Wars Episode II, Natalie Portman has asked George Lucas the possibility of playing Indiana Jones's daughter in the next installment. Looks like another tie in between the two franchises . . . . and Natalie does have the looks and resemblences to actually make this rather likely . . "

This is one of those rumors that no one can confirm unless they ask Lucas or Portman directly -- which we'd love to do. We'd also like for world peace to happen in our lifetimes, wouldn't we?

[They're called 'Deep Throat' for a reason...but we don't know why.]

September 14, 2000... Just when you think he's too old Ford may not be through with Indy just yet. According to the latest report at Popcorn, Harrison Ford reveals his thoughts on the possibility of playing Indiana Jones in the fourth chapter of the infamous franchise. Here's a look at what Ford had to say...

"I'd be very happy to play Indiana Jones if we can get a script we can all agree on and make a film that is at least as good as the ones we've made before...Steven (Spielberg) is enthusiastic, I'm enthusiastic, even (George) Lucas is enthusiastic. And you may know that M. Night Shyamalan is anxious to write the script...

"I hope the deal can be made, and I would hope to do it in the next couple of years..."

We're happy to hear that Ford is still keen on Indy after all these years, but isn't this the same line we keep hearing over and over again? You think if Spielberg, Lucas and Ford really wanted to make this film become a reality there wouldn't be much of a problem standing in their ways, would there? [Appeared at Popcorn; reported by Reg.]

October 1, 2000... The possibility of revisiting the role of Indiana Jones seems to be a hot topic with Harrison Ford. In a recent interview posted at the Internet Movie Database, Ford reflects on his years within the film industry and what the future may hold as he approaches his 60th birthday. Ford admits that his body isn't as durable as it once was but it shouldn't hinder him as he looks forward to doing another Indiana Jones film. Here's more of Ford's thoughts from the recent interview:

"Q: What about Indiana Jones? Do you think there's still some new territory to be covered there?

"FORD: Yes. I'm looking forward to doing a fourth Indy. It's a great character that I've enjoyed playing in the past and I would like to revisit him. I think the movies are great entertainment and Steven Spielberg and George Lucas and I have spent a lot of time discussing how we would like to proceed with the next Indiana story.

"Q: Are the chances fairly good for another sequel?

"FORD: We're still hammering out the details, but I'm pretty confident we're going to do another Indy although it might be at least a year or more before our respective schedules allow us to do it. I'd personally love to work with Sean Connery again. I think audiences would enjoy seeing us back together.

"Q: Will Indiana age gracefully?

"FORD: I think we have to show that he's suffered some wear and tear over the years. That's going to make his character that much more interesting. For me, adding some flaws and layers is what is going to make Indy even more interesting. We can address issues like whether his character's virtues are based on his youth or on other aspects of human nature like his wisdom, his toughness, his resourcefulness, his integrity. A lot of work went into creating Indy and giving him a certain history and identity, and I think it will be extremely fascinating to expand on that. It's something that I think the public would enjoy watching."

[Appeared at the IMDB; reported by Reg.]

December 6, 2000... A reader in Philadelphia let us know that a newspaper insert magazine in The Philadelphia Inquirer re-iterated the news last weekend that Spielberg, Lucas, and Ford were hard at work recruiting M. Night Shyamalan to work on the script of IJ4. While we had previously been led to believe that M. Night was one of several screenwriters under consideration way back in July, the fact that this little tidbit surfaced again, in an interview with Shyamalan, lends a little more credibility to the notion that he may be indeed the frontrunner for the job. [Scoop submitted by Jean-Pierre Melville, world renowned deep-sea novelist.]

January 17, 2001... The decision is supposed to be this week, but the week is half over. What decision? Apparently Night is going to choose whether or not he's scribing this thing. Where did the word come from? Night's parents. I mean, let's face it--if you were going to script this thing, who would you call first and tell the news to? Anyway, they expressed this news to The Hindu this past weekend. The problem? They say, "It is a sequel. He always wants to write original stuff." For more info, check out Harrison Ford Online. [Originally appeared at The Hindu, Harrison Ford Online; thanks to Sean for the headsup.]

February 4, 2001... Thomas sent us word of a quick mention in the New York Times regarding Stephen Gaghan, screenwriter for Traffic. Apparently he had gotten a call asking him if he was interested in scribing this flick. Hmmm. Does that mean the aforementioned decision by Night has been made? [Originally appeared in The New York Times.]

We've also created our first archive for this page. For scoops pre-1999, click here.

April 19, 2001... We go now an unconfirmed report from a scooper who apparently was doing some business with the folks at LucasFilm:

"I took the order...and couldn't resist asking 'When the heck is Indy 4 coming out?' My contact assured me he was in a development meeting for upcoming projects, and that Indy 4 is planned tentitively for a 2004 release. He also reiterated that NO Indy movie would be without Harrison Ford. As far as the story, 'several' scripts/ideas are being looked at...so anyone that claims the Atlantis or Excalibur story or any other as the one true storyline is speculation."

[Thanks to J.]

July 5, 2001... A recent article in The New York Post has set off a worldwide flurry of reports that a new Indiana Jones movie might be right around the corner. Sorry, but that's just not the case.

The Post report, in which the paper said Paramount executives were looking at scripts for a fourth Indy film, has been picked up by news services around the planet. But in reality, the project is no further along than it's been for years. Neither Lucas, Spielberg or Ford have committed to the project, and an approved script doesn't even exist yet. Trust us -- just because Indy 4 scripts exist doesn't mean the project has advanced any further than the script stage. [Thanks to 'The Bassman', Andrew MacDonald and Eileen.]

January 21, 2002... While covering last night's Golden Globe Awards, FOX News reporter Roger Friedman spoke with Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford and Kate Capshaw at a post-Awards party. There Friedman got what amounts to a extremely rare Indiana Jones 4 scoop!

All three said that a Indy 4 is going to happen but it was Spielberg who added that making Indiana Jones 4 will be his priority after he completes Catch Me If You Can with Leonardo DiCaprio. "We have a title, but we're not ready to announce it," Spielberg said to FOX News's Friedman. "I will give you one clue, though. Kate [Capshaw] is in it." When Friedman asked if that means we'll see her Temple of Doom character in some sort of flashback, Spielberg answered "No. She'll be in the present."

Like we said, it's finally some sort of news to report. [Scoops sent in by Edward Canale, Jeremy and 'DarthQueeg'; originally appeared on FOX News.]

May 7, 2002... After years of raising the fans hopes only to see time keep marching by without a greenlight on Indiana Jones 4, it seems events might be finally starting to happen this time. While a rumor has taken off that screenwriter Tom Stoppard (Shakespeare in Love) has been approached to write the Indy 4 screenplay, call it a suspicion, but we don't think it's for real. Meanwhile, at last weekend's Star Wars Celebration producer Rick McCallum did answer a fan's question about the status of IJ4. McCallum made a promise that it was going to happen but didn't give any indication as to a time frame. ['Scottsman282' tossed us the whip and we gave him the idol.]

May 20, 2002... IGN FilmForce reports that the mystery writer assigned to write Indiana Jones 4 is...Frank Darabont (The Majestic, The Shawshank Redemption). When contacted by FilmForce, Lucasfilm rep Jeanne Cole would neither confirm nor deny the rumor. Sounds like a direct hit to us. [Originally appeared on IGN FilmForce.]

And it looks like we've uncovered one of the new characters that Mr. Darabont might be writing (if he does indeed have the job). The Dutch TV magazine Vara had a brief interview with Star Wars creator George Lucas discussing his new film Attack of the Clones. Vara's interviewer couldn't resist asking about Indiana Jones 4 and George said this: "Spielberg is directing, and Indiana will have a son." The filmmaker also said that after he finishes Episode III and the new Indy movies he wants to create smaller, more experimental films. ['Nol-T', you rock.]
