POINTLESS TIDBITS AND USELESS FACTS:
Director George A. Romero, Night of the Living Dead [1968] was originally attached to write and direct, but left the project due to creative differences over the script.
This film was originally titled "Resident Evil: Ground Zero," but the title was changed to just "Resident Evil" after the September 11 attacks.
The events of this movie take place a few days before the first game in the Resident Evil series and it's last few scenes (with Alice waking up in a zombie filled Raccoon City) take place during the second game.
The final fate of the Matt character, (Eric Mabius) is known to fans of the games.
The password into the Red Queen's Chamber is '12177'
A newspaper in Racoon City reads 'The Dead Walk!' This is a direct reference to Day Of The Dead [1985] in which a newspaper at the beginning of the film reads the same.
On the front of the Umbrella train to the Hive. It reads 'Alexi-3000' Alexia is the name of one of the heads of Umbrella in Biohazard: Code Veronica.
One of the men in white biohazard outfits close to the end of the movie makes a reference to transporting Matt to the 'Nemesis' project. The Nemesis is the creature that persues Jill Valentine through Biohazard 3: Last Escape [1999] (VG)
There is a shot near the end of the film of Alice's eye close up. This is a direct reference to the first game in the series. The close up eye shot is the logo/title screen of the game.
The second movie based on a video game directed by Paul Anderson (III). The first was Mortal Kombat [1995].
Connections to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland:
- Main character's name is Alice.
- Computer is named 'Red Queen'.
- 'The Red Queen' needs to kill someone who is infected, so she tries to get someone else to chop off their head. (Off with her head!)
- Alice in Wonderland paperweight
- A white rabbit was use to test the T-virus.
The sequence with the soldiers trapped in the hallway being killed by the moving lasers was inspired by a similar sequence in the Canadian film Cube" [1997] .
After George A. Romero left the production in July 1999, the project was dormant for over a year before Paul Anderson (III) signed on to write and direct the movie.
The film begins a few days prior to the original Biohazard [1996] (VG), but ends in the middle of the timeline for Biohazard 2 [1998] (VG) and Biohazard 3: Last Escape [1999] (VG). None of the characters featured in the film are present in the Resident Evil/Biohazard game series, unless you count Matt, who is theoretically turned into Nemesis, the primary monster in Biohazard 3: Last Escape [1999] (VG).
Next to Alice, on the police car (at the end of the movie) when she took out the shotgun. On the hood has the Logo S.T.A.R.S. from Resident Evil 1.
References to the each of the Resident Evil Games: Resident Evil Survivor: Some one loses their memory and at the end it returns to them. Resident Evil Code Veronica: Matt runs into his sister that is now a zombie and has to watch her "die". This is similar to Steve Burnside having to watch his zombie father die, but by his own hands.
Alice's "supposed" husband is named Spencer. In the first Resident Evil game, the mansion it took place in was called "Spencer Estate".
William Birkin, the man responsible for the creation of the G-Virus in Biohazard 2, is the one who designed the Red Queen. Kaplan explained that the Red Queen's holographic representation was modeled after the designer's daughter, the holographic image looking similar to Sherry Birkin.
The film pokes fun at several elements in the games: -Alice and Matt look very similar to Jill and Chris from Biohazard [1996] (VG). Steve from Biohazard Code: Veronica [2000] (VG) looks similar to Leon from Biohazard 2 [1998] (VG).
Like in the games, after something is switched on/off, something else happens elsewhere. When the Red Queen is deactivated for the first time, all doors elsewhere are opened. -The wedding picture of Alice and Spencer looks similar to the pictures from the first two games (with the subjects up close and spliced onto the background image, and always in black and white).
In the movie, Alice's faux husband is named Spencer. This is a reference to the first game which took place in a mansion named the "Spencer Estate".
